ebooks at MWE

This week students have been learning about 2 sites that provide MW with some wonderful ebooks! Students who were trained came home with instructions on how to access these books on computers, tablets, and phones! Overheard by students looking at ebooks:
"Whoa! This is so cool!"
"Can I stay here and read this some more?"
"Can I read these at home?"
"I love this!  It's so neat!"

Favorite titles were:
from eSebco
Hunting with Great White Sharks Hunting with Wolves Peculiar Stories Behind Raining Cats and Dogs and Other Idioms

from Capstone: (these books will track the words and read aloud the text, too!)

More to come about our digital titles next week...

Toddler Story Time: Pirates!

We missed "Talk Like A Pirate Day" on September 19th, but we didn't want to miss out on the fun! So, today we did lots of piratey things!

Our Pirate books:
Pirate girl Pirate girl by Cornelia Funke - a girl gets put to work on a pirate ship, but her mom did not like that!

How I became a pirate How I became a Pirate by Melinda Long - we watched the Tumble Books version, which had great narration and animation of the pictures from the book!

A pirate's guide to recess A Pirate's Guide to Recess by James Preller - using our imagination to pretend pirates are playing with us is so much fun!

Our Pirate Songs:
"Jake the Pirate Theme Song" by Disney Junior
"The pirates who don't do anything" by VeggieTales
"The more we get together" by Howcast
"Talk Like a Pirate" by Pirate Band Music
"Goodbye Song" by Out of the Box

And we played a game to practice being a pirate, too!
Here are the Captain’s commands and what the crew must do immediately if they want to win.
  • Here comes the Captain: The crew must stop what they are doing and stand very still with their hand in a salute position on their forehead.
  • Man overboard: Find a partner and grab onto them.
  • Starboard side: The crew must run to the right side of the ship.
  • Port side: Run to the left side of the ship.
  • Scrub the deck: Drop to the floor and pretend to start scrubbing the deck.
The captain can yell out these commands in any order he chooses and if the captain gives an order before you can finish the first order you must stop what you are doing immediately and follow what he tells you. (from Essential Kids Blog)
